Aonad Summer Camp 2022

Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are happy to inform you that with the help of Kerry ETB and Comhcoiste Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh the Irish Course for our new 1st year Aonad students will take place in Ballinskelligs, from 25-29 July 2022, inclusive. Please find the timetable and start times attached. Students are asked to bring a packed lunch, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing/change of clothing.

Covid We request that all students participating in the course take an antigen test the evening before the course starts. If it is positive they should not attend camp.
Regardless of the antigen test result, if a child is displaying symptoms of COVID-19 they should not attend camp. Any child who develops symptoms during the camp will be sent home. Any child absent from camp with COVID symptoms must stay at home until 48 hours after their symptoms finish.
We hope the students enjoy their time in Ballinskelligs, we very much look forward to their start at Coláiste na Sceilge.

Aim of the course
In addition to the 10 week online which all students participated in concentrating on grammar, written Irish and Oral Irish, the aim for the week long course is:
- For the students to get to know each other through Irish.
- Practice the oral Irish the students learned during the 10-week course.
- Learn the course song.
- Practice Irish though activities.

The students will arrive, there will be seating arranged in circles designed to get students talking to each other.
There will be a member of staff encouraging students to talk through Irish.

There will be an oral class I which the students will mix with each other(adhering to social distancing). Questions will be written on the board, the students will be asking each other questions based on ordering food at a café

Students will be put into teams. The students will get the necessary vocabulary beforehand.

Class based on irregular verbs. In teams the students will have to come up with a story 11 sentences long using each of the irregular verbs. They will also have to act it out.

Day 1.
In the morning the students will all meet each other for the first time. The purpose of this class is for the students to get to know each other and ask each other questions. These questions will include questions covered prior on the 10-week course.

Also, the students will start the first verse of the course song ‘Riptide’ as Gaeilge. The singing lessons will take place outdoors and each student will get their own copy of the song.
As well as that the students will go over the necessary vocabulary for that evening’s sport which will be rounders and vocabulary needed for the beach.
Later that day, the students will learn their first dance, ‘The Walls of Limerick’.
Day 2.
The day will start with a class. During the class, the students will be practicing vocabulary based on ordering food. There is a café In Ballinskelligs which will be able to facilitate students through Irish. This will be optional as it will cost money. Also, they will go over the vocabulary needed for Olympic handball which they will play later. Again, a more detailed lesson plan will follow.
Then we will cover the 2nd verse of the course song, again this will take place outside.
Later that day the students will learn their 2nd dance, ‘The Siege of Ennis’.
The students will go to the local café to practice that morning’s lesson.
Also, there will be the first of the team events for a sandcastle competition. Prizes for this will be given out at the end of the week.
Day 3.
The students will go over the 3rd verse of the course song, they will also go over the vocabulary needed for that day’s activities.
The egg competition is a good team building exercise. This will be another team event for which prizes will be given out at the end of the week.
The students will learn their 3rd dance, ‘Shoe the Donkey’, they will also go over the previous 2 dances.
Day 4
In this morning’s class, the students will finish the course song.
Then the class will be based on the 11 irregular verbs. The students will have to write a short story, only 11 lines long, one irregular verb in each sentence. They will also have to act out the story. The purpose of this is to learn the irregular verbs.
Then the students will learn their final dance ‘The Bridge of Athlone’ they will also practice the 3 other dances.
Also, that day the students will play sports through Irish, they will also go to the café again to practice Irish outside the classroom.
Day 5
On the final day the students will start by going over the course song. They will also go over the necessary vocabulary for that afternoon’s BBQ.
Then they will go to the beach, have a brief snack, and go swimming.
There will be a BBQ at 1 o clock.
There will be a ceilí and games to finish off the day and the course.
